Davidson, Pope receive Lasseter Scholarships

Recipients of David Lasseter/MCHS Class of 1969 Scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic school year are Aaron Davidson, grandson of Danny Barrett, and Caroline Pope, granddaughter of Maron Summar.

Davidson will receive the $1,000 scholarship at Middle Tennessee States University for fall semester 2024, and Pope will receive the $1,000 scholarship at MTSU for spring semester 2025.

The scholarship committee selected Davidson and Pope from six applicants, the largest number of applicants ever to seek the scholarship at one time.

"The scholarship offers a positive and ongoing tribute to the members of the Class of 1969," according to the class website.

The scholarship specifically honors David Lasseter "for his leadership and contributions to the class." Lasseter began the online mailing list that has kept class members connected for more than 20 years.

Aaron Davidson

Davidson, a native of Murfreesboro, is an incoming freshman at MTSU and plans to major in aerospace maintenance with a long-term goal of becoming a pilot.

"The major will give me a good set of jobs skills to finance my becoming a pilot," Davidson wrote in his application. "It will also be a good degree to have if I decide I do not want to be a pilot professionally." Davidson currently works as package handler for FedEx, and one day he may be a pilot for FedEx or UPS.

He wrote that he would rather work as a pilot for cargo rather than passengers.

"I love talking to people and getting to know them," he wrote, "but it would worry me when there are hundreds of people relying on me to get them to a location safe. "I would rather it just be me, a copilot, and some cargo."

In his spare time, Davidson plays basketball, disc golf, and recently golf and participates in martial arts. He is a third-degree black belt and volunteer teacher.

Pope also is an incoming freshman at MTSU and is majoring in an allied health technology concentration in the chemistry department.

Pope, a native of Rutherford County, will complete the first three years of the program at MTSU and then move to another university for technology studies to complete the program.

She arrived at MTSU with 21 dual-enrollment credits, so she will be able to start in sophomore-level classes and major courses.

"I plan to work in the field of sonography/ultrasound, X-ray, or radiology," she wrote.

Outside the classroom, Pope has been busy working as a server at a restaurant and interning with two veterinary clinics in Murfreesboro.

"I have had my own business of animal-sitting in their personal homes for two years," she wrote. "Whether it is drop-in care or overnight in their home, I have taken care of many people's animals and have shown myself to be trustworthy and caring for both their animals and their home."

Pope in her spare time in high school played travel volleyball with the MID-TN Volleyball Club.
